So when setting up your new Windows 10 Laptop you use your current email account, nice quick and easy @btinternet.com @sky.com etc everyone does it. It's been working fine for years but you are now faced with your email account being closed after moving to another provider…. technically your laptop will still function and allow you to sign in but it's worth planning early to move to a new account, just in case they pull the plug and you lose access to your email account.
Increasingly account providers are requiring additional levels of security to sign into your account, whether that's 2FA (2 Factor Authentication) or MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) it normally requires you to still have access to the email account and a mobile phone to call/text verification. This means that it's essential to migrate all of your current settings to your new email account following the below recommendations.
Prepare a new account to sign into, this can be a new email account e.g. @yahoo.com or a free @outlook.com (very quick and easy to setup in Minutes)
Add the new account to your laptop using the Windows Settings > Accounts > Family & Others
Make sure the new account is set as an administrator of the device
Prepare all of your existing account settings - Applications, Email Accounts, User Profile Data and customizations that will need to be migrated. This process can be performed manually by an experienced user or it can be automated using any of a number of paid tools e.g. PCmover Profile Migrator by Laplink
Sign out of your existing account and sign into your new account
Once signed in, complete the migration of all of the settings and data from the old account
Check and make sure all applications are functioning as desired
Once complete and confirmed the old account can now be deleted from Windows Settings > Accounts > Family & Others
Pre advice before the migration is performed:
Ensure that you have a valid backup before performing the process e.g. Free Veeam Home Backup
Once migrated we would recommend a period of 1 week to 1 month before deleting the old account just to make sure nothing was missed during the migration
