The beauty of migrating to a new laptop with Google Workspace!

So you've had enough of your old slow laptop (the thought of launching it out the window often crosses your mind) and its time to upgrade. But hang on you've got 9 years of work and your life on your old device.

Well if you are a Google Workspace user this is where the process has become far far easier!

With Google Workspace your files and settings can be stored directly from within your account and saved up in the Google Cloud space (Googles vast number of servers based all over the world) https://www.google.co.uk/about/datacenters/.

To get started we would recommend for the below features to be enabled on both your old and your new laptops:

  1. Within Google Chrome in the top right hand side you will see a circle symbol next to the 3 dots. If you haven't already, make sure you have selected this circle, signed in and it is reporting that your data is being synced. By enabling this setting all of your browsing history, bookmarks, browser settings, usernames and passwords will be saved to the cloud and transferred across automatically to your new laptop. Here's Googles recommended guide https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/185277?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en

  2. This is a big one, downloading and using Google File Stream so that you can see your Google Drive files and folders from within Windows Explorer / Mac Finder. This will allow you to copy any files / folders from your old laptop e.g. Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music and Videos straight to your Google Drive and will then be available immediately on your new laptop without needing to save them to an external drive. Here you can find the download link for Google File Stream for Windows/Apple Mac https://support.google.com/a/answer/7491144?hl=en. Once installed and signed in your can drag and drop your files and folders to start the upload process.

  3. If you are a love of Outlook and have thousands of emails, heavily used calendars and important contacts we would recommend to use the GSSMO (G Suite Sync tool for Microsoft Outlook) tool https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gssmo/#. This allows you to have a fast and consistent experience when using a Gmail account with Microsoft Outlook. Simply sign into the tool on your new device with your Google Workplace credentials and as if by magic Google handles the rest for you. Within a few hours you will be back up and running on the new device.

As you can see from the above steps for important browser data, files and Emails Google Workspace has you covered and can have you up and running on a new device within hours.

Outside of the Google bits it may take a little migration to get your applications re-installed and licenced but an experienced support provider can assist you with this to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Kind Regards
